Anxiety is complex full-body response that involves physiological changes, behavioral reactions, cognitive appraisals, and psychological changes. The function of anxiety is to signify danger or threat to one’s life, health, or well-being. In truly dangerous situations, anxiety is an adaptive response that acts as a true alarm. However, in the case of anxiety disorders threat is detected in unrealistic or unlikely scenarios, acting as a false alarm.

Anxiety is maintained by behavioral avoidance with feared situations. Although in the short-term this reduces anxiety, in the long-term avoidance is what keeps the cycle of anxiety going. Other contributing factors include anxious self-talk, mistaken beliefs about the world, and ineffective coping skills.

Our Anxiety Management group has the following goals:

  • Increase an individual’s ability to cope with and manage anxiety triggers
  • Decreasing avoidance and other behaviors that maintain anxiety
  • Challenging unhelpful thoughts and assumptions about the world
  • Improving daily functioning and overall quality of life

The Anxiety Management group is a closed ended, 12 week course. For more information, please call (516) 390-3525, Mitch Young (ext. 12) or Dr. Tracy Kisner (ext. 18.)
